Chapter 37 Summary

Nick explains to Finn his deduction that Feliks isn’t looking to buy land; he just needs a plot to hide something. Thus, he approached Theresa, whom he could bribe with money and attention, rather than buy a plot from Steven. Nick believes something is buried in the fallow plot, as he spotted other sets of vehicle tire marks; all the vehicles appear to have parked in different places, but they all faced the same plot.

Nick drops Finn home and asks if he can take her out for dinner later, but she demurs, quoting work deadlines. Finn notices Mrs. Haggerty’s curtains draw open as Nick leaves, and strides over to give her a piece of her mind. This time, Mrs. Haggerty opens the door, and demands an apology for the way Finn reacted when Mrs. Haggerty informed her about Steven and Theresa. Finn obliges when Mrs. Haggerty suggests she saw something suspicious in her garage.

The night Finn returned with Harris in her minivan, a tall man bent and looked inside the minivan once Finn went inside. Mrs. Haggerty went to get her phone to call the police, but before she could, the man had disappeared, and the garage door was closed.
